Do the Librarian Dance!

Thing 10: Future Trends...

Just reading over "Manifesto for 21st Century School Librarians"by Joyce Kasman Valenza article makes me feel overwhelmed!!! There is SO much to teach these kids (and adults)! I want to do what's best for my students but time always seems to be an issue. I was going through the list with a "Yep, yep, gotta work on that, yep I do that, Ohhhhh what's that?!"

I know that when there is a demand for something (whether it be Playaways or teaching kids iMovie) I am there to meet that demand. Even if it means I need to learn it first!!

I was just looking at the International Children's Digital Library and LOVE it! I have many students at my school where English is their 2nd language. I will be showing this to my teachers ASAP! We have a subscription to Tumble Books (which is fabulous!) However, I saw many other choices of language books with ICDL! Fantastic!

I do like what Thomas Fey said in the article, The Future of Libraries: "Libraries are here to stay because they have a survival instinct. They have created a mutually dependent relationship with the communities they serve, and most importantly, they know how to adapt to the changing world around them."

I was just looking at the SKYPE author visits! What a great idea!!! I can see this as something becoming more popular to the future.

I also think we really need to start looking into eBooks! After watching the Horizon report, it really does make sense. I have a hard time believing that print will be out-dated in my library before I retire, but I think there will be a lot more diversity with types of media being used.

When I think of the future of libraries and technology, I find it very hard to judge. I look at my iPhone and NEVER thought I would/could have these capabilities even three years ago!! And now--I'm addicted to it! I don't think we will be at the "Jetson's" stage anytime soon, but I know if we don't keep up with everything now, we will get left in the dust!!!
